Dear members:

Welcome to the Alumni Platform of Overseas Universities (APOU) website!

I have been privileged to be part of the MIT Alumni Association for almost 40 years.  During that time, my alumni network has hugely enriched my work and my life.  The Alumni Platform for Overseas Universities has the potential to deliver similar benefits on an even larger scale.  Let me share with you five ways that APOU can enrich both your life and your career, and make your university degree more valuable at the same time.

1).  Enjoy life-long friendships.  Several years after graduation, you may discover that you have lost track of some of your closest friends from your university.  APOU can help you find and re-connect with them. You will discover that your fellow alumni form one of the most capable, thoughtful, and passionate groups you are privileged to be part of.  I’m constantly inspired and informed by the plans, accomplishments, and ideas of my fellow alumni.  So please look forward to using APOU to keep connected with your classmates, whether through the member directory, events, alumni news updates, or by providing updates on your own activities.

2) Build your professional network.  In addition to staying in touch with alumni in your field from your university, APOU will enable us to find and connect with alumni from many fields and many universities.  Increasingly, innovation takes place at the intersections of disciplines.  So finding and connecting with professionals in adjacent fields not only expands your career opportunities, but also enhances your capabilities and potential as an innovator.

3) Continue learning for a lifetime.  Because of the ever-accelerating pace of innovation and discovery, life-long learning has never been more important.  What we learn during our four years at university is becoming a smaller percentage of everything we need to know in life, because so much more knowledge is now being discovered or created after we graduate.  APOU plans eventually to provide access to university knowledge-based resources, such as articles, lectures, and online courses, all of which are great vehicles for continuing your learning over a lifetime.

4) Build your management and leadership skills.  Volunteering with APOU is a safe environment to experiment and discover your management and leadership style.   I served as president of the MIT Club of Northern California in the early 1990’s, during which time I started my first software company.  As a volunteer leader, I was able to try new things and discover my management style.  I attribute the success of my first two companies in part because of the experience gained in this alumni volunteer role. You can enjoy the same benefits by volunteering with APOU.

5) Enjoy the satisfaction of giving back.  The contributions of many who preceded us today both made our universities possible and made it possible for each and every graduate to be here today.  At some point, we realize that to keep great educational institutions advancing, and to enable the next generation of students to enjoy the same quality of education that we did, we have to provide the same support that those who preceded us provided before us.

MIT is a great global institution in large part because of the interest and involvement of its alumni over many decades.  Similarly, through your use and involvement with APOU, and encouraging others to become involved, you can help make your university as great a worldwide institution as you wish.  And that rapidly helps each of us in return, by making our degrees from and affiliations with our universities even more valuable.

Thank you for your support and involvement with APOU! I look forward to getting to know you in person.

Best wishes, John Chisholm

Dear Alumni Members:

As alumni University of Wisconsin and Thunderbird of School of Global Management, I understand the great value of support from fellow alumni in my own personal and professional growth throughout my career. I believe there is a greater value to have a platform that connects ALL alumni from across universities so that members can engage themselves socially and professionally in many different ways. Therefore, I helped to co-found this Alumni Platform of Overseas Universities to benefit the greater alumni community.

Alumni Platform of Overseas Universities (APOU) is organized voluntarily by representatives of overseas university alumni as an international, non-profit organization. Its mission is to provide overseas alumni organizations and their members a common on-line and off-line platform to connect and better serve individual alumni and alumni organizations through social, professional and other events and activities. It is organized “by the alumni and for the alumni”.

It is my hope that through this Platform, members can attend great events of your interest, share ideas, meet fellow alumni, form teams, receive quality and most updated information of the area or industry most pertaining to you, meet with government officials, seek funding for your project(s), look for internship or employment, find great international education for your kids, or seek anything else you can think of, you will find the answers here, and most importantly, you will get these answers from someone close to you or you trust.

Thank you for your great support as members and wish you most successful in your personal and professional life.
